The SOS GED Online Program
What’s on the GED?
The GED (General Educational Development) test is made up of four subject areas: Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. Pass all four and you earn a GED credential — the equivalent of a high school diploma. Here is the full map of the test, so nothing about test day is a surprise.

Breaking Down the Mathematical Reasoning Test
The Mathematical Reasoning test covers math concepts, measurements, equations, and applying math to real-life problems. This math may be far easier than you think — most of the material is knowledge you already use every day. There is no need to memorize formulas: a formula sheet is provided for you to use while you test.
Time to Take the Test
- 115 minutes total
- Includes two minutes of instructions and final review
- Includes three-minute breaks between sections
Test Format
- Two parts, with a calculator allowed on the second part
- Access to a calculator reference sheet and a math formula sheet
- Question types: multiple choice, drag and drop, fill-in-the-blank, select an area, and drop down
Basic Math
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and other common math equations.
Geometry
Math involving the shape, size, distance, and position of figures.
Basic Algebra
Math equations using letters to stand in for unknown numbers in order to solve the question.
Graphs and Functions
Using graphs and equations to relate how one quantity depends on other quantities.
Breaking Down the Reasoning Through Language Arts Test
The Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) section tests your reading comprehension and your writing. You should be comfortable with reading and writing concepts, including grammar, and able to show your understanding of the content, draw conclusions, and write clearly.
Time Allotment
- 150 minutes total
- Includes three minutes of instructions and final review
- Includes ten-minute breaks between parts two and three
- Includes 45 minutes for the written essay
Test Format
- Three sections
- One written essay
- Question types: multiple choice, drag and drop, select an area, and drop down
Reading for Meaning
Apply your reading and thinking skills to answer questions based on single and paired passages.
Identifying and Creating Arguments
Analyze two passages, decide which argument has the more convincing evidence, and explain why that evidence supports your choice.
Grammar and Language
Review written text and select words and phrases so the sentence structure is correct — capitalization, punctuation, verb tense, and more.
Extended Response
Write an essay analyzing two arguments to explain which one is best supported.
Breaking Down the Social Studies Test
The Social Studies test gives you context for understanding the nation, the world, and society. This is not a memorization test. You will apply social studies concepts, read graphs and charts that display social studies data, and use reasoning to interpret information. Questions are built on your ability to determine central ideas, analyze words and events, evaluate the author’s reasoning, and interpret data and statistics.
Time Allotment
- 70 minutes total
- Includes two minutes of instructions and final review
- No break
Test Format
- Calculator allowed
- Access to a calculator reference sheet
- Question types: multiple choice, drag and drop, fill in the blank, select an area, and drop down
Civics and Government
Modern and historic governments, constitutional government, the levels and branches of the United States government, the electoral system, and the role of the citizen.
U.S. History
Colonialism and the American Revolution through the Civil War and Reconstruction, into the modern era of industrialization, two world wars, the Cold War, and the movements for equal rights.
Economics
Basic economic concepts and systems, the government and the economy, and labor and consumer economic issues.
Geography and the World
Major stages in world history, as well as the relationship among resources, the environment, and societies.
Breaking Down the Science Test
The Science test measures your ability to understand and apply scientific concepts, read graphs and charts that display scientific data, and use reasoning to interpret scientific information. It is not a memorization test. Questions are based on your understanding of the skills used in scientific study and investigation. The 34 questions draw on reading passages and on graphics such as diagrams, tables, graphs, and maps — or a combination of the two.
